Helpful tips for prom 2012!

With the new school year approaching, it is now time for High School juniors and seniors to start thinking about their end of year activities. Having something fun, like your 2012 prom, to look forward to will make the hard work of studying, applying to colleges, and term papers a breeze. Devoted juniors and seniors who take the time out of their busy academic schedule to help plan end of year activities, specifically prom committees and yearbook staff, should start to urge their peers to think about what they are going to do for their prom in 2012. Here are a few ideas to get you started!

Choose a Theme

By choosing a theme for any event, the rest of the planning process will fall into place with ease. A themed prom will help guide the rest of the planning like your choice of venue, prom tickets, entertainment, photography, décor, and types of food and drink that will be served.

Some theme options could be an elegant masquerade ball, a Hawaiian luau, era themed prom (20’s – 90’s), Hollywood (think red carpet and paparazzi), and how the students can dress to make it somewhat cohesive.

Choose a venue

Choose your venue location early, so the students can save money. Helpful tip: if you book your prom venue in 2011, you can get pricing for 2011, your 2012 prom will be a bit cheaper per plate.

Choose your transportation

There are so many options to choose from for your transportation to the prom. If you’re going with a huge group of students, it may be best to rent a party bus for the evening, or even a classy limousine. If you drive, it may just be fun to show up in your own car to save some cash.

Choose your attire

It’s never too early to start passing ideas around with your friends. MissesDressy.com has plenty of dresses and gowns to choose from for your 2012 prom, and we’ve started to add all of the latest styles on our website. Collaborate with friends! Make this part of High School career the culminating moment of all of your hard work! Don’t forget about after prom formal wear as well, after prom dresses are suitable for painting the town red and in divine style!

*Remember to always consult with parents, teachers, and advisors for help in finalizing contracts with venues, photographers, and transportation.

Did you get inspired?

We hope you caught last night’s MTV Video Music Awards where stunning divas of sound and stage graced the “black” carpet wearing truly inspiring dresses! We hope you got some dress ideas for your upcoming prom, but to help you get the wheels even more in motion, we’re providing close matches to the gowns that were worn on the red carpet.

Sigh. Lady Gaga didn’t really impress us with her alter ego suit, and she didn’t bother to wear a gown, so our prediction was all for naught. However, we thoroughly enjoyed her performance, we mean his, of “You and I.” We still <3 Gaga and commend her for working ‘it.’

Beyonce was dressed for two in a beautiful asymmetrical gown by Lanvin showing off her baby bump. Mimic Beyonce’s style by wearing the same neckline, but shorten the silhouette to make it more youthful. Beyonce wore a lot of bling, so if you don’t have the excess cash to don rocks like B, opt to wear a dress already glammed up like this sparkling cocktail dress by Terani Couture Prom. The dress will fall elegantly on your frame and the above the knee length skirt will lengthen your silhouette. Like Beyonce’s dress, there is an asymmetrical neckline, and this dress differs slightly offering hints of sparkle. The billowy sleeve mimics Beyonce’s dress and you can look chic and modern for a fraction of the price, but still look super expensive!

Selena Gomez stole the pre-show by wearing a super sexy hi low gown donned in vintage lace from Julie MacDonald’s A/W 2011 collection. Pulling off this style is super easy, because this hi low dress offers back coverage and shows off some skin in the front! Check out this dress from the Dancing with the Stars by La Femme line where you get the hi-low dress and vintage lace feel. This dress features a romantic sweetheart neckline and a bodice softy embellished with fabric details. Lace and mini flowers cover the mini skirt for a more feminine feel. The only thing missing is you and a classic updo!

Share your thoughts about what you thought about the VMA’s and if you got any inspiration from the black carpet!

The long sleeves are perfect for a brisk autumn evening, or the freezer like temperatures of the office. Slanted side pockets are useful for carrying your cell or extra lip gloss.

For brides to be, rainy days are the perfect opportunity to get some wedding planning done, and we’ve recently added this gorgeous sweetheart mermaid wedding gown from the Bridal by Mori Lee collection. The sweetheart neckline embodies romance and is mimicked in the back of the gown as well. The back of the gown features buttons from mid back down to the hips for maximum closure and support. (Helpful Tip: crochet hooks are useful when clasping the buttons together on the big day!) The rich organza and Chantilly lace are paramount staples for an elegant wedding gown and is evident head to toe, notice the scalloped bottom adding a more ethereal feel. The mermaid silhouette is perfect for any body shape, curvy brides welcome! Adorned at the side of the gown is a gorgeous fabric flower. Seeking some fashion inspiration? Or if you’re looking for your Prom 2012 dress, be sure to check out MTV’s Video Music Awards where the hottest singers and bands will be showing off their vocal chops and their chic sense of style. Awards season is the best time to see the latest trends, you don’t have to wear the exact designer, but you can get helpful ideas about what types of colors, silhouettes, necklines, and lengths are hot for the upcoming season.

Last year, no one could forget Lady Gaga’s meat dress, but we’re hoping that Gaga goes elegant by wearing something that doesn’t spoil if not refrigerated. Maybe Gaga can wear a gown by Mac Duggal when she accepts her Album of the Year award; we were thinking this shimmering evening gown with high front slit. The broad shoulders and deep v-neckline are reminiscent of the outfit that she wore from her appearance at the 2011 Grammy’s when she delivered an historic performance of Born this Way. The heavily embellished wide belt cinches right under the bosom, and the mirrored sequins provide a luminescence fit for a star! However, we still wouldn’t mind Gaga going in her usual and exciting attire! ;)

Heavy hitters like Beyonce will most likely wear a couture gown that will further radiate  her elegance on the red carpet maybe from couture designer Jovani. Pop icon/princess, Katy Perry, can pull off anything, because she’s got a vintage vibe to her style, so we wouldn’t mind seeing her walk the red carpet in a design by Sue Wong.

The red carpet is the fashion runway to the stars and celebrity elite, so be sure to watch closely and take notes! Stay tuned for our follow up blog post about who and what everyone wore, and we’ll provide matches to save you some cash and make you look super gorgeous for your Prom or your next formal event! The MTV VMA’s are on this Sunday, September 28 at 9/8c!!

In honor of NYC Fashion Week, today’s Designer Spotlight is dedicated to the fashion designer, Tadashi Shoji. You may remember from our recent blog post about Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, we mentioned the critically acclaimed designer Tadashi Shoji. Tadashi Shoji will be presenting his Spring 2012 evening wear collection where his fabulous designs will be walking the runway at Lincoln Center on September 8.

Tadashi Shoji was born and raised in Sendai, Japan—the area most recently affected by 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami—Shoji has raised money to help aide his home country with proceeds from dress sales. Shoji’s early life started with a deep attraction to the fine arts, and he moved to Tokyo where his youthful love of painting and drawing took him to new heights prompting an internship with Japan’s leading contemporary artist, Jiro Takamutsu.

Shoji went to the United States to attend college in Los Angeles where he immediately fell in love with fashion and worked closely with Bill Whitten. Shoji designed clothes for Elton John, Neil Diamond, and Stevie Wonder under the Bill Whitten label during the 1970′s. Shoji yearned for more and his passion was geared toward dressing the modern woman in elegant and chic evening wear.

Since 1982, the fashion house, Tadashi, paved the way for women’s formal event attire by designing truly inspiring pieces and many continue to be worn by your favorite A-list celebrities like Anna Paquin, Mo’Nique, and Melora Harden.

Impeccable design and a close attention to detail make each Tadashi Shoji dress a treasure. Each evening gown and cocktail dress has its own unique flair leaving the wearer the opportunity to illustrate her keen fashion sense and chic sense of style. Each Tadashi Shoji gown has vintage qualities with modern adornments.  The possibilities are endless when choosing your gown for your next formal event from the Tadashi Shoji evening wear line; take a look at this gorgeous evening gown that gives a nod toward Grecian fashion. The high asymmetrical neckline is adorned with a rhinestone brooch for a touch of sophisticated elegance. This gown would be perfect for use as your wedding gown, because of its feminine mermaid silhouette and gauze like over lay of rich chiffon.

Your dress should set the tone for your event and Shoji’s designs create a comfortable, elegant, and modern feel within each stitch.
