Dots or plaid? (and the story behind it)

Publication1

Not only the story of fairy tale that has the happily ever after ending, we believe that tartan (or plaid), polkadot, houndstooth, and argyle still going to be the “it” pattern every now and then. Let’s look at the journey of these patterns…

Tartan (or Plaid)

Tartan is a legacy of the history of Scotland since the 16th century, which has become the identity of the state. In those days, tartan belong to the luxury fashion items and not everyone can wear them. In fact, the size the horizontal and vertical lines as well as different colors symbolizes the social status. At the beginning, the pattern was only worn by men or the Scottish Highlanders to distinguish between family clans. However, since Queen Victoria visited Scotland and was wearing a tartan for her activities there, tartan eventually became popular among women and an inspiration to many designers in their collections. These days the mixture colors are not only red, black, and dark green, but with a lot more varieties.

 Polkadot

Who does not know this lovely pattern? Although it has been known since ages ago, the origin of this pattern remains a mystery. Some events was expected as  the birth of polkadot, such as the polka dance in America brought by an immigrant from Eastern Europe, polkadot on Minnie Mouse’s outfit is iconic and is becoming increasingly popular thanks to the song “Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polkadot Bikini ‘”.

Houndstooth

As the name implies, it resembles a form of the dog’s teeth pattern. Again, this pattern is also from Scotland. Although it is usually synonymous with black and white, a combination of two other contrasting colors can also be used. At first, it was made of woven wool houndstooth, but nowadays, this pattern is produced by using various materials.

Houndstooth has several times become a trend, especially in the 1930′s, 1970′s and early 2000. In the 1950′s, it became the most popular pattern among men and enlivened the runway in 2008 with a collection of Marc Jacobs and in 2009 with a collection of Alexander McQueen. Even today we can also find houndstooth on some accessories such as shoes, scarves and clutch.

Argyle
Socks and sweaters are the two items are identical fashion with this pattern. Argyle is a pattern that resembles a diamond or rhombus shape in layers. The origin of this pattern is quite mysterious. Based on the story, Argyle was born from a group of men who live in the western region of Scotland called Argyll. There, they cut their tartan cloth to cover their feet and the pieces formed Argyle pattern, that was how socks with this pattern created for the first time.

Argyle is one of the pattern which have become the hallmark of the high end brand, Pringle of Scotland. According to the rumors, this brand was the pioneer of Argyle patterned sweaters in the 1920′s. In America, this pattern was starting to become a fashion trend when the label owner of Brooks Brothers took home Argyle patterned piece of cloth and began to produce from 1949 until now. Argyle’s popularity even more uphill when the teens and adults wear it to look preppy.

Towards the end of the year, it’s all about sparkle and glitters. Almost all fashion items ranging from clothes, shoes, accessories to make up with elements of metallic colors became the target of the fashionista. Color that is identical with the glamour can maximize your appearance to look more ‘wow’ at a party.

Actually metallic color itself does not only consist of silver, gold and bronze only. Other bright colors like red, blue, green, and purple can also be categorized as metallic color for effect sheen. But if you want to play it safe, choose the shoes and clutch with metallic colors because it will be easier to mix and match.

To play with a metallic fashion item, you can go all out with metallic colors, glitters, or sequins, but it doesn’t necessarily mean everything must be ’covered’ with a metallic color. Go for “a dash“, which means a hint of metallic color for your accessories. Or “a splash“, which means a little bit more of metallic color, for your dress or gown. Or “all out” if you are feeling bold to wear head to toe in metallic, all sparkle for the special end of the year party!

In addition, shoes and clutch with a touch of metallic colors are also quite easy to be adjusted to various parties. For a glam party, you can tone up your look with a dress with sequins and metallic accessories, or you can tone it down with a little black dress for a casual one.

Irreplaceable: Marilyn Monroe

Publication1

She died almost 50 years ago, but her popularity and fame is not debatable. Actually, what makes her so difficult to be replaced?

Christina Aguilera’s new look is golden blonde hair and Marilyn Monroe’s make up as her signature style. Madonna looked all glamorous with a pink Marilyn Monroe style strapless gown in the video clip “Material Girl”. So many people wrote a book of a story about an actress who died at the age of 36 years, it’s like her story is endless. Why is she so attractive?

She was born as Norma Jeane Baker and considered as a woman who has everything, but it turned out that behind all the glitz and sparks, she is fragile and did not have anything.
“She died in a little bungalow, in a cluttered room, bombed out of her mind on pills and unhappiness, and I think people identify with that,” said David Gainsborough Roberts who’s admiring Marilyn Monroe and a collector of all things Marilyn Monroe.

Biographer “The Final Years of Marilyn Monroe: The Shocking True Story”, Keith Badman, also adding that the appeal can be radiated by the stronger Monroe thanks to her beautiful image, cheerful and sexy personality  that she maintained perfectly. Monroe died when she was still very beautiful, nobody will ever imagine or think of how she would look like when she gets old and has wrinkles. So in your mind, Monroe stays young and beautiful.

“Her image is forever locked in that beauty. We will never find a picture of her looking old or past her prime. She was an exceptionally beautiful woman and she died very young,” Badman said.

What comes to your mind when you hear her name? Bedroom eyes? Blonde wavy hair? Diamonds and heels? Pointed brows? Open mouthed smile? Pouty red lips? That beauty mark above her upper lip?

For me, it’s how she dressed up. She knew what looked great on her and she could show off her figure whilst maintaining her modesty.
What are her colors? Marilyn wore beige, black, cream, red, white, and mostly champagne colors. Her favorite store was Bloomingdales, her favorite designer was Emilio Pucci, and her favorite shoe designer was Salvatore Ferragamo.

Party Outfits For The Holidays

Picnik collage

I know putting together outfits for the holidays’ numerous parties can be hard for us ladies because we’ve got tons of things to do in such a short amount of time!  So to help you lovelies with the task of creating fab party outfits, I have picked out these dresses right out of our Holiday Dresses section (together with some other items).  Now you won’t have to worry about what you’ll wear because I’ve put it all together for you!

During the holidays, there are usually three events that require us gals to look glam: the Office Christmas Party, the Christmas Party/Night Out With Friends, and the ever-so-festive New Year’s Eve Celebration.  Below you can find the outfits that I’ve put together for each event to help you save time and energy in thinking about what to wear.  Enjoy!

Office Christmas Party

Mix business with pleasure with this outfit at your office Christmas party!  Featuring the 3/4 Lace Cocktail Dress by Jovani, this number adds a little sexy touch to your smart style with the sheerness of its fabric.  Just balance the sheer out with a solid-colored purse (quilted bag) and shoes (ankle boots), and voila! you’re ready to party.  To add a little shine to all that black, wear a silver or white gold cuff (like the one in the photo).

Holiday Night Out With Friends

For your Christmas celeb with friends, be ready to paint the town with your Little RED!  The perfect dress for this event is the Draped Beadwork Cocktail Dress, also by Jovani.  Its color, while being the iconic color of the season, is also great to add some heat to winter’s harsh cold.  An excellent contrast to the warmth of red would be some ice cold bling (Swarovski chandelier earrings, above) and silver rhinestone ankle boots (Steve Madden, above).  As for makeup, smoky eyes are your best bet for that ultra-glam look (MAC Cosmetics, above).

Note: Notice that the shoes here are similar to the one at the first event?  Just pick one color that you think matches most of your clothes–that way, you can save your hard-earned moolah and still look fantastic!

New Year’s Eve Bash

End the past year and start the new one with a bang in this Tony Bowls Shorts Gold Sequin Dress, the ultimate party number!  With gold and silver sequins filling it all over, this dress will surely make you soar and shine just like a firework.  Since the dress is already heavily sequined, it’s best that you keep the accessories to a minimum with this one.  A cute addition could be these silver star earrings with rhinestones or a plain gold cuff, as worn by the model.  The shoes need to be quite toned down as well.  Try a pair in a pewter shade (Bebe, pictured above) as it’s best to underline the dress’ flash.  Don’t leave the house with bare nails, though–slather on your tips NARS’ Holiday Collection nail polish (as pictured above) and you’re ready to go.  Cheers!
