2012 MissesDressy Style Awards!

featured

In retrospect we must admit this has been a phenomenal year in fashion— Angelia Jolie‘s infamous right leg, Kristen Stewart‘s style revamp, and that mad scientist Karl Lagerfeld‘s manifestation of our childhood past time into the most talked about piece at Spring/Summer 2013 fashion week. Gotta love the interpretive genius of this great industry. As we assemble our yearly round-ups it’s hard not to remember the creative minds and fabulous faces of the the year gone by.  With everything from Style Icons to Fashion Blogger of the Year, check out the winners of the 2012 MissesDressy Style Awards!

Best Spring 2013 RTW Collection – Burberry Prorsum

Filled with bold colors and everyone’s favorite (and possibly hazardous) candy clear handbags, Burberry Prorsum S/S 2013 stood out as chic and innovative. Though a narrow favorite, it won us over with wearable, fresh pieces. We hated choosing a winner from all the fabulous lines, but the trophy had to go to someone!

Most Influential – Anna Wintour

There are few names in fashion as well known and highly regarded as Anna Wintour. After over twenty-years as Vogue‘s editor-in-chief she’s left her mark on fashion in more ways than one. Over the year she not only gave up-and-coming designers the opportunity of a lifetime, by way of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, she was also one of Forbes Most Fashionable Power Women, and a frequent front rower during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week S/S 2013 shows around the globe.

Model of the Year – Karlie Kloss

Not only is Karlie Kloss the clear victor for model of the year, she’s arguably the sole face of 2012 fashion. She’s appeared in numerous spreads and runway shows including a highly controversial Numero shoot, Victoria’s Secret’s2012 and Rag & Bone S/S 2013 runway shows, and Target + Neiman Marcus’ 2012 Holiday campaign. How many 20 year-old’s do you know with a resume that extensive?

Style Maven on the Rise – Emma Stone

Over the year Emma Stone has been working her way to style greatness. Having dyed her fiery mane blonde and coupled up with new beau Andrew Garfield, 2012 has been been a fun and free year for the starlet. On the fashion radar she stunned during Spring 2013 fashion week and has appeared in one fabulous runway look after another.

Brand of the Year – H&M

This one’s a no brainer. The mega brand has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue after what’s been a jam-packed year of collaborations and hot collections. Apparently H&M is the new go-to for high-fashion designers with an itch for the mainstream market.

Fashion Blog of the Year – The Blonde Salad

If you’ve never heard of The Blonde Salad blogger, Chiara Ferragni your laptops’s either been kidnapped or you’ve been tucked under a rock for the past year. Transcending the former fashion blog box Chiara has moved from an Italian student blogger to Teen Vogue/Italian Glamour model and fashion designer, creating capsule collections for Mango and her own shoe line.

Style Icon of the Year – Anna Dello Russo

Oh, Anna. The bold and sassy editor-at-large and fashion consultant for Vogue Japan has branded herself as an eccentric style pioneer over the years. Among all of her projects and appearances this past year, her H&M jewelry collaboration and feature in Barneys Electric Holiday were two of our favorites. There’s something intoxicating about this woman; we can’t wait to see what she pulls out of her (undoubtedly fabulous) hat next.

Freaky Friday: Celebrity Style Switch Featuring Britney Spears – Christina Aguilera

Britney-Christina Style Switch

Now here’s a crazy idea. How about we take two long-time big-time Hollywood rivals and switch their styles? Can you imagine? This idea is inspired by the astonishing notion of  how one music artist breaks through the mainstream not only through her, well, musical artistry, but also with her fashion, how she is “packaged”. Some use style to be set apart from others, sometimes sadly, only for the sake of. Some have used it to make a big comeback. Some have actually even used kooky fashion to market themselves.

So it makes us wonder, for one, what if Christina Aguilera did the sexy school girl bit while Britney Spears the edgy more mature image? Would they have become the icons that they are now? This is physically impossible. But, let’s use our imagination and see what if. So, here’s The Britney Spears – Christina Aguilera Style Switch.

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera appear on stage at the 2000 VMA’s

Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera perform with music great, Madonna at the 2003 VMA’s

These two have been at it for the longest time. Back when they were still Disney babies as Mouseketeers in “The Mickey Mouse Club”, they were already silently at war to becoming the next it girl.

Britney Spears (bottom right, beside the now yummy Ryan Gosling) and Christina Aguilera (behind Britney, in front of Justin Timberlake) as “Mousketeers” in The Mickey Mouse Club

When they got to their teens, they both became the biggest names in Pop going face to face with their hits like, “Baby One More Time” and ”Genie in a Bottle”. And, they go head-to-head again, this time as judges in their shows, X-Factor and The Voice, which have the same format and U.S. time slots.

 The “X-Factor” judges panel

“The Voice” judges panel

Britney Spears got into the music scene as a sweet school girl –all-American– maturing into the girl next door. An album later, she portrays herself as some misunderstood princess. Then she surprises everybody (well not really, it was kind of predictable) with one sexy persona after another in her succeeding albums: red leather-clad alien, snake-carrying amazonian, rebelling, angry, crazy-hot woman. Let’s give it to her though, she paired her seductive image and fashion with awesome performances and great showmanship.

Britney Spears style evolution

Britney Spears’ iconic schoolgirl / girl-next-door style

Christina Aguilera as we mentioned started with mature more herself style. Then she used her sexuality as she went for the “girl power” image. She probably was among the first who did the color-streaked-hair edgy thing. After that, she ventured into a more soulful image, and combined it later on with the 50′s pin-up fashion. But this lady didn’t just make her mark because of her very individual, out-there fashion. She backed her style “revolution” with her powerful vocal pipes and deep artistry.

So, okay, with all things considered, abracadabra, let’s now do the switch… tada!

So would it have worked well for them had they done these styles? Share to us your thoughts.

Style It Like the “RED” Hot Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift RED

The charismatic, considerably talented, Taylor Swift has released her highly-anticipated fourth album, RED just less than a month ago. With it she proves just how (quite appropriately) red hot she is as she maintains to hold the #1 position in the Billboard’s 200 top albums chart, earns U.S. sales exceeding 1.5 million albums in RED’s first two weeks (scoring music’s highest first-week sales in more than a decade), and reaches #1 on the iTunes sales charts in 42 countries. When asked about the album title, she shares:

“Red is such an interesting color to me because you have the great part of red. Like, the red emotions that are like daring and bold and passion and love and affection. And then on the other side of the spectrum you have jealousy and anger and frustration and ‘you didn’t call me back’ and ‘I need space.”

With the release of her album she has also posted photos used in the album artwork. Style and Taylor lovers like us have taken note of the styling, individuality and honesty of the images. She sticks to her own prim and proper style, and we love it. Check out some more of the photos to get a sense of her unique style.

To add fuel to her hotness, Taylor Swift took home 3 of the most sought-after awards at the 2012 Europe Music Awards held in Frankfurt, Germany: Best Female Act Award, Best Live Act Award, and the first ever Best Look Award. The Best Look Award celebrates the music star with the greatest style for the year and rightfully so, Taylor Swift was voted as this year’s style leader beating Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Jack White, and A$AP Rocky.

Taylor’s awesome night at the EMA’s capped her week in Europe which included stops in London and France for promotional appearances for RED. Before and after that, she also completed a wave of shows and guest spots in the U.S. Let’s breathe in more of Taylor Swift style goodness as we look at photos of her recent appearances in Europe and in the U.S.

Britney Spears’ Controversial Cover and Selena Gomez Gets Sexy in December Mags

featured

At a mere 31-years-old Britney Spears‘ career has risen, fallen, and skyrocketed again. As a world renowned pop star and mother of two, she is on top of the world in more ways than one. But in usual Britney fashion her December Lucky magazine cover has been stirring up a bit of controversy. Fans took to Twitter complaining that the X-Factor judge looks heavily photoshopped and is sporting a bad wig. Regarding the wig, we must agree– it’s much more hair than we’re used to seeing on Britney and that hairline is near her eyebrows! Now as for the alleged photoshop, uh… what’s new? Celebrities are airbrushed regularly in print ads and magazine spreads and though it’s misleading and unrealistic, it certainly isn’t a new practice. Since the backlash Lucky tweeted an ambiguous message to fans, steering clear of whether or not the images were in fact edited (duh) stating, “Thank you all for sharing your thoughts on our cover! As always, we will share with our team and we’re sorry to have let some of you down.”

Take a look at the spread, along with quotes from the article where Britney dishes on Demi Lovato and how she balances motherhood and a career.

On what fashion pieces she’s into: ““Big, stupid earrings, like with loops and feathers.”

On who’s the meaner X-Factor judge: “I actually think Demi is a little harsher than me.”

On the best part of being a celebrity: “I get, like, these giant boxes of lip gloss and nail polish, and it’s like candy.” - “I really just wear mascara all the time. And powder, because I have zits.”

“I think most people are their own worst critics. I’m a perfectionist. I want things done a certain way. I am hard on myself but not regretful.”

“I work out. I swim. I play with the kids, I cook and I garden. We play Connect Four. We play Candy Land. Last night we read The Night Pirates.”

As a product of childhood Disney stardom, Selena Gomez has literally grown up right before our eyes. Now 20 years-old, the youngest-ever UNICEF ambassador, and girlfriend to the most famous heartthrob in the world, it’s fair to say that she has bypassed the teeny bopper stage, onto a blossoming career. In the old-Hollywood style December Glamour magazine spread, Selena seems hell bent on proving that point, wearing a bold red lip and oozing sexy confidence. The days of Wizards of Waverly Place are over! Though gorgeous, with that young, round face we think the “I’m a grown up” stance may be a tougher sell than expected.

Check out a sneak peek along with Selena’s thoughts in stardom, her upbringing, and how she keeps in touch with Taylor Swift.

On Justin Bieber’s fans: “I would never, ever want to disrespect them. You know, I get it: I was obsessed with Jesse McCartney growing up! He was my world. My high school crush. So I respect it, and if anything, I admire it.”

On her experiences as a UNICEF ambassador: “If you think how we live our lives here, we need so much to keep us entertained, and we expect so much. And these kids want an education so badly. I mean, I hated homework, and they want it; it’s amazing.” – “I also participated in the Global Poverty Project’s Live Below the Line campaign, where I lived on $1.50 a day for a week—such a cool experience.”

“It’s because of [my mom] that I can do things on my own. I like being professional. I like showing up on time. I like being good to people, and I know that I’m reflecting her at the end of the day.”

“I grew up in one of the biggest high schools in the world, and that’s the Disney Channel. Everybody was falling in love with each other or not liking each other, and it was exhausting…and I was the shy one in the corner. And now I’m so opinionated, and I don’t have time for the cattiness. I have good people around me, and I’m glad I’m at the place I’m in. I wish I was there back then.”

“I actually did talk to Taylor last week, and we were like, “I don’t even remember the last time I saw you,” which is really unfortunate. But if it gets too dire, I fly to Taylor or I fly home or I fly to Justin.”

Shoesday Tuesday: The Velvet Shoe

featured

Yesterday, we did a round-up highlighting some of our favorite velvet looks worn by celebs and on the runway. But we saved the best for last since shoes are always the cherry on top! The velvet shoe works like many other velvety articles as a great way to accentuate a full look. The fabric brings lush elegance to just about anything it touches, translating all the novelty in vintage style along with refinement and modernity. As key must-haves on their own, the loafer/slipper and heel are only enhanced when dressed up in velvet. Check out looks worn by hot celebs and during this season’s fashion week shows.

The Velvet Slipper

Style maven Alexa Chung always makes her way to our trend round-ups one way or another. Here she’s spotted wearing Penelope Chilvers Black Embroidered Velvet Dandy Slipper on  two different occasions (don’t you just love celeb reruns? hey, they’re people too!) Love the embroidered palm tree… what a witty juxtaposition.

Taylor Swift has mastered classic style, even in her casual wear. Here she’s wearing ox-blood and blue velvet loafers on two days out and about, with nearly the same outfit! Velvet slippers do go well with a button-up, cropped pant combo so we won’t dock any points for the rerun– can’t deny she looks fab.

The Velvet Heel

Velvet wedges! Hot, hot, hot. Ali Hilfiger‘s get-up is a perfect example of how they can spruce up an outfit. Gotta get a pair of those…

The fabulous Charlize Theron could probably wear anything and look flawless. Rich deep shades of velvet are hallmarks this season and these Christian Luoboutin Velvet Pigalle pumps pretty much show you why.

Jessica Alba‘s super cute strappy velvet pumps add a little sexy to her whimsical floral dress. Along with the color, the fabric adds the pop that dress needs!

During Fall/Winter ’12/13 Fashion Week Dolce and Gabbana sent a boat load of lush velvet down the runway. Paired with gold embroidery, the pointed toe heels and black pumps took elegance and sophistication off the map.

We can’t mask our obsession with all things velvet. We’ll definitely be snagging a pair or two and suggest you do the same!

Elizabeth Olsen’s No Longer the “Other” Sister

feature

It happens every time. Young, new, extraordinary talent creeps onto the scene and before we know it they’ve taken the world by storm. Remember, Anne Hathaway did it. Emma Stone is doing it. And now Elizabeth Olsen is on her way to world domination. As the not-so-little sister of child mega stars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen, Elizabeth obviously has big (and most likely fab) shoes to fill. But following her track record thus far, she’s decidedly blazing her own trail, opting out of lingering in the shadows as the third twin. We can not get enough this girl.

After her breakout role as Martha in the indie drama Martha Marcy May Marlene, Liz quickly became the one to watch at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival. Next up was the horror film Silent House, which also debuted in theaters last year and officially solidified her range of talent and versatility. The world is definitely watching and with new movie Liberal Arts in select theaters and more films (Therese Raquin, Very Good Girls, Oldboy) in the works, it’s only the beginning of a budding career.

On the fashion front Lizzie is working those good genes, appearing in a number of editorial spreads. She’s a natural and doesn’t seem to gravitate to the uber glam style but more of an understated chic confidence. Oh, what a thespian! We’re just eating it up over here…

Vs. magazine, April 2012

 Bullett magazine, Fall 2012

The Guardian, September 2012

So, yea… we’re pretty much fawning over everything Liz Olsen these days and how in the world could you blame us? She is definitely one to watch and with bated breath that’s precisely what we’re doing.

Celebrity Style Focus: Leighton Meester

Leighton-Meester-leighton-meester-1361355-1024-768

Whether she’s playing the wickedly fabulous Blair Waldorf in “Gossip Girl” or singing to us who makes “them Good Girls Go Bad,” Leighton Meester sure knows how to do it in style.

The actress, whom we last saw co-starring with funnyman Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy,” can teach young ladies out there a thing or two about dressing; so let’s backtrack Miss Meester’s best red carpet outfits from 2006 through 2012:

2006: Beach Blonde

Tanned with super light blonde hair, Leighton looked every bit the fresh young Hollywood newcomer that she was. Here she was at a Motorola event in Hollywood wearing a knee-length lace kimono dress with printed flats.

2007: Blair is Born

Here’s Leighton, who’s dyed her hair brown, with her “Gossip Girl” co-star, Blake Lively at the CW Television Critics Association Press Tour party in West Hollywood. Never to be overshadowed by her on-screen BFF, Leighton wore a green mini dress that contrasted well with Blake’s yellow frock.

2008: Miss Missoni

That year we saw Leighton really moving up the style ladder. One perfect example is this well-loved outfit of hers at the 5th Anniversary of Fashion Rocks. This one shoulder evening dress by Missoni (a label of which she will become a face) was well-received by fashionistas and fans alike for its lovely colors and over-all chicness.

2009: Gossip Goddess

Leighton Meester impressed us even more when she attended the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards wearing a white Greek-inspired Bottega Veneta dress. While some didn’t like her makeup in this event for being a little too ‘dark,’ I personally think it gave a nice contrast to her white dress. I loved the dramatic look!

2010: Miss(ter) Meester

In 2010, Leighton made an edgy turn style-wise, wearing uncommon choices at red carpet events. That year she some avant-garde frocks such as a lace jumpsuit and a crocheted dress. This one is no exception: at the 20th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards Leighton wore a charcoal-hued suit by Thom Browne complete with a necktie. The budding star (and stylista) balanced out her mannish threads with tousled hair, smoky makeup, and high heeled pumps.

2011: Leather, Louis, Leighton

Proving that she’s no novice when it comes to high fashion, Leighton attended the 2011 Met Gala wearing head-to-toe Louis Vuitton. Her look was met with applause from fashion experts, praising her for making such a bold choice.

2012: Golden Glamour

While some weren’t impressed by Leighton’s outfit at this year’s Met Ball, she sure glowed on the red carpet. She wore a gold applique and nude tulle Marchesa Fall 2012, which she paired with a clutch, also from Marchesa.

Hope you had fun walking down fashion memory lane with me! To get your daily dose of celebrity red carpet looks, visit (or better yet, follow) missesdressy.blogspot.com!

Top 10 Best Dressed Celebrities at Spring/Summer ’13 FW

feature

The stars were definitely out and about at this season’s Spring/Summer 2013 runway shows. As usual models on the catwalk weren’t the only glamorous ones with celebrities looking fabulous top to bottom. Though we spotted tons of jaw-droppers and eye-catchers, we somehow managed to narrow down the fashionably-inclined to a Top 10 best dressed list. In no particular order…

1. Amanda Seyfried at Miu Miu S/S 2013 Show

Always elegant and sophisticated Amanda Seyfried knows how to kill two trends with one stone. Wearing a plum lip and Miu Miu red pantsuit, the starlet nailed two fall trends in one seamless look.

2. Jennifer Lopez at Chanel S/S 2013 Show

If J. Lo can’t do anything else, she can definitely show up and out looking fabulous. Wearing a white lace Dana Budeanu dress she looks whimsical and feminine with daughter Emme in tow. Adorable!

3. LeeLee Sobieski at Christian Dior S/S 2013 Show

My… a lot has changed since Never Been Kissed! LeeLee Sobieski looks stunning in this red trench coat dress. Cinched with a metallic belt, the piece is straight from Christian Dior’s Fall 2012 Haute Couture Collection.

4. Olivia Palermo at Burberry, Christian Dior, and Topshop S/S 2013 Shows

We’re beginning to think socialite and ex-reality star Olivia Palermo can do no wrong. As she made her rounds during this season’s fashion week events, she donned one fabulous look after another. It was way too hard to choose one, so we didn’t.

5. Rachel Zoe at Rodarte S/S 2013 Show

Layered, sleek, and slightly boho hippie with edge make for a polished Rachel Zoe. She rarely (if ever) misses the mark so her spot on our lineup is a given.

6. Dree Hemingway at Balmain S/S 2013 Show

Models pretty much owned the front row at a number of shows. Dree (great grand daughter of literary genius Ernest Hemingway– ahh!)  looked super cool in a Balmain jacket and orange beanie.

7. Salma Halek at Balenciaga S/S 2013 Show

Salma turned it up with chic glamour this season. In all black the Latin actress and long time fashionista looked high profile and simply flawless.

8. Emma Stone at Calvin Klein S/S 2013 Show

Oh, Emma Stone. Aside from being one of our favorite celebrities, she’s proven to be quite the stylish one. This cocktail dress and strappy yellow shoe combo work together beautifully along with her wavy, easy breezy hair. Young and vibrant rarely look this good.

9. Taylor Swift at Elie Saab S/S 2013 Show

Taylor Swift’s classic beauty is uncanny– and she looks just darling under an umbrella! Her blue knee-length dress and red lip were perfection. She’s also working those bold bangs and waves per usual.

10. Diane Kruger at Calvin Klein S/S 2013 Show

It’s almost sickening how gorgeous she ALWAYS looks! The cropped long-sleeved top and leather skirt is simple and chic. We could see this get-up going terribly wrong on someone else, but Diane stuns– enough already!

Honorable Mention: Kanye West at Christian Dior and Givenchy S/S 2013 Shows

We’re giving an extra kudos to the G.O.O.D. music rapper and producer because he decided to leave ol’ Kim K. at home during his trip to the Paris shows. The pair’s been missing in action lately and we’re actually enjoying a break from all the mushiness. Though his outfit at Christian Dior (left) is nearly identical to the one he wore to Givenchy two days later, he rocks the suited up in kicks look well.
