Red Carpet Recap: 2013 Golden Globe Awards

golden-globe-awards-690x363

The biggest stars in film and television came out in their finest last Sunday, January 13th in Beverly Hills to attend one of the year’s most-awaited events, the 70th Golden Globe Awards. The ladies dominated the show, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as hosts and Jodie Foster as this year’s recipient of the Cecil B. Demille award for a lifetime of cinematic achievement. Of course, the red carpet was also dominated by gorgeous women and fashion as they paraded in their finest frocks in celebration of the evening.

Red carpet looks generally exuded an elegance that can only be achieved in simplicity. Although some may argue that too much simplicity could border on the boring, I must say that– thankfully– no one opted to shock viewers with an outlandish look this year. It’s also interesting to note that the better outfits revolved around 3 hues: black, beige/white, and red.

With no further ado, here are the trends we spotted on the glamorous Golden Globes red carpet. Be the judge and tell us whose looks you liked best!

Fashion Trends at the 2013 People’s Choice Awards

PCA Red Carpet

The 39th Annual People’s Choice Awards (PCA) was held Wednesday night, January 9th at the Nokia Theater in L.A. The memorable moments from the show were Taylor Swift’s plunging neckline and her being Kanye’d by award presenter Olivia Munn, Hunger Games’ 5-award victory, powerhouse performances by equally talented artists Alicia Keys and Christina Aguilera, and many others.

But, there’s no mistaking that we all tuned in more-so to see what our favorite celebrities wore on the red carpet. We dare report that based on the PCA’s red carpet, our Hollywood style idols are still quite hungover with the 2012 fashion. They donned some of the top trends in fashion from last year. Have a look at some of the notable repeat trends from that night at the PCA.

BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL

Happy Ending star Casey Wilson looked dashing in a bold blue Jerome C. dress paired with a bright pink clutch. | Chloë Grace Moretz, star of the kick-ass movie, Kick Ass, painted the town neon yellow with her Simone Rocha mini. | Glowing with her Hawaiian tan, Glee star, Lea Michele showed off her legs via a bright pink Elie Saab dress with matching heels. | Britanny Snow looked fresh in a lemony Maria Lucia Hohen dress.

ANGELS IN WHITE

Morena Baccarin of Homeland donned a white strapless pantsuit. | Grey’s Anatomy star Ellen Pompeo looked pretty and fragile in a loose white dress cinched by a wide black leather belt. | Seemingly taunting her ex, One Direction’s Harry Styles, Taylor Swift dumped her usual sweet princess look a for a sexy semi-tailored white gown with a plunging neckline. And to top it off, she’s bagged the People’s Choice award for Favorite Country Artist. | Superstar Regina King was commissioned to hand a special award to friend Sandra Bullock; and for the job she wore an elegant white cocktail dress with a lace sash.

DARK COLORS + SHIMMER

Naomi Watts looked every inch a movie star in a dramatic gold and black backless number. | Ryan Seacrest’s girl knows how to rock sequins. Julianne Hough sparkled in a midnight blue Tony Ward Couture dress and silver Guiseppe Zanotti shoes. | Project Runway host and mother of four– yes four –Heidi Klum vamped it up in a Julien McDonald black dress with glittered slits detail. | Rumer Willis was all covered up yet looked so hot in a black and silver sequin gown with diagonal stripes hugging her curves.

Wallpaper-downton-abbey-32428606-1920-1080

As everyone’s favorite TV hit, PBS’ period masterpiece Downton Abbey moves on to its 3rd season– and its fashion evolves along. While the 2 previous seasons showcased Edwardian-era designs, the latest season (which premiered just yesterday) opens in the roaring ’20s, an era known for its most important contribution to fashion: the flapper style. As more mysteries unfold in the hit series, expect to see a lot of fantastic flapper looks as well.

Shirley Maclaine, an exciting new addition to the hit series' wonderful cast

Season 3 opened with Lady Mary’s wedding that featured a haunting and romantic gown any vintage fashion fan (like myself) would fall head-over-heels for:

Top 10 Fashion Magazine Covers of 2012

Top Ten Fashion Magazine Covers 2012

As TIME Magazine connotes, one magazine cover can echo a thousand words, but not all has the makings of being one so arresting.

“The best photographs don’t always make the best covers. It takes a smart concept, a meticulously executed image, smoothly integrated typography, and the combination of all those factors to create an immediate and lasting impact.” ~Kira Pollack, Director of Photography, TIME

There’s much to say about the reasons that we love glossies, the least not being the covers. We love how a striking cover of our favorite star or a fantastic styling draws us to a copy. But what we love most is the treat of seeing our Hollywood idols take on a surprising persona, and how that transports us to some fantasy land, just like a whole-length film. So as 2012, a beautiful year in fashion, comes to a close, we present a round-up of our top 10 fashion magazine covers of the year to honor some of the best works in the industry.

10. Vanity Fair JULY | Kristen Stewart

Okay, so it has pretty much become obvious that we’ve more than warmed up to the notoriously bad-ass K-Stew (excuse our language). We think we love her already. We specially love her on this July cover of Vanity Fair, photographed by Mario Testino in one of their photo shoot locations across Paris. This cover is among the first indications of her finding her sense of style. This cover and the spread that follows allow us to see her in ultra high fashion, completely dolled up, yet still her mysterious very individual self.

“I have been criticized a lot for not looking perfect in every photograph. I’m not embarrassed about it. I’m proud of it. What matters to me is that the people in the room leave and say, ‘She was cool. She had a good time. She was honest.’ I don’t care about the voracious, starving shit eaters who want to turn truth into shit. Not that you can say that in Vanity Fair!” Kristen Stewart tells Vanity Fair contributing editor Ingrid Sischy in July’s cover story

9. Vanity Fair MARCH | Rooney Mara, Mia Wasikowska, Jennifer Lawrence, Jessica Chastain, Elizabeth Olsen, Adepero Oduye, Shailene Woodley, Paula Patton, Felicity Jones, Lily Collins, and Brit Marling

Shot by Mario Testino, this cover features 11 of the most beautiful up-and-coming Hollywood actresses in pastel satin dresses, styled in 20′s boudoir, lounged across a tri-panel fold. Very Golden Hollywood-esque. What more is there to say? –Jawdrop.

8. Wonderland MAY | Dakota Fanning

Ex-child wonder Dakota Fanning looks every inch a lady in this cover of Wonderland. In the photo shot by Cedric Buchet, she sports an Emporio Armani black and white button-up and a matching hat. She is styled with cropped wavy hair and make-up in dark shades –not her usual. We adore how this cover portrays her quirky side, with that faux white mouse crawling out of her hat, and all.

7. Tatler MAY | Christy Turlington

As a welcome break from the usual glamorous covers and such, we include in this count-off, this cute and funny portrait of supermodel Christy Turlington on UK Tatler. She and the magazine purposely went for the look of a typical male director –sporting a straw hat, a vintage camera, and! a thin mustache –as an ode to Ms. Turlington’s passion for film directing.

6. Numero OCTOBER | Alexa Chung

Wide-brimmed black felt hat and a pretty Valentino lace dress in a garden setting make this Numero cover featuring Brit style star, Alex Chung, a perfect Fall highlight. Did she wander into a labyrinth? Capturing such an easy-breezy feel is photographer Angelo Pennetta.

5. Vogue FEBRUARY | Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift wears an oversized knit sweater and a floppy felt hat, and peers fiercely into the camera on her first ever cover for Vogue. For the entire spread she gets a make-over from her usual sequined gown, getting plenty of boho chicness in fringes and prints. The photo shoot is lensed by Mario Testino; and we believe that by far, this is the best capture of Taylor Swift –not the pop princess, but the country rock star.

4. Harper’s Bazaar SEPTEMBER | Gwen Stefani

On the opposite side of the spectrum from Taylor Swift is stylish rocker chick Gwen Stefani. She gets a rad “make-over”, too, for her Harper’s Bazaar cover where she gets dressed in head-to-toe pink couture. Yes, pink. How many times do we get to see that? The lucky person to capture that on film is photographer Terry Richardson.

3. W Magazine NOVEMBER | Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, Mia Wasikowska, and Rooney Mara

For the 40th anniversary issue of W Magazine, photographer Steven Klein gets to capture on lens Keira Knightley, Scarlett Johansson, Mia Wasikowska, and Rooney Mara who get a cover each.

Each actress was styled in Fall 2012 pieces meant to represent one of the last four decades: Mara channels the ’70s in patterned Prada and an oversize Albertus Swanepoel hat, Wasikowska is utterly ’80s in snakeskin-printed Balenciaga, Johansson is the picture of glam ’90s in black Dolce & Gabbana, and Knightley — almost unrecognizable with slicked-back blond hair — is a vision of the 2000s in sculpted Chanel.” ~fashonologie.com

2. Vogue JULY | Emma Stone

This is also Emma Stone’s first ever Vogue cover, and we say it’s about time. She wears a flimsy Nina Ricci lace dress, and is photographed by Mario Testino for the shoot. The usually covered-up Emma bares some skin coming up with an ultra-feminine and sexy portrait. A blockbuster, again. Better get a good look out for this one.

1. W Magazine DECEMBER | Marion Cotillard

An absolute masterpiece, shot by Tim Walker, this cover photo starring French actress Marion Cotillard is selected by TIME as one of the “Best Photographic Magazine Covers of 2012″ for its artistic value. We don’t question why.

“Marion Cotillard is hands down, France’s most delectable export.” ~Lynn Hirschberg, W Magazine

Top 5 Fashion Trends of 2012

2012 Top 5 Fashion Trends

This is our round-up of the top 5 favorite style inspirations and fashion statements in the year that was 2012. We give you the most memorable trends that debuted and reappeared on the runways, red carpets, stylish streets, and editorial pages. Are you ready?

1. Revival of the Dark Eras: Baroque and Gothic

Famously avant-garde designers like Alexader McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana, Aquilano Rimondi, and Balmain revived these period styles for 2012, and boy did they make the fashion world ecstatic.

Baroque implies strangeness, drama, and extravagance. In the modern times, these are interpreted by way of incorporating gold, brocade, and other luxe materials.

While, Gothic, with its rich, mysterious, and darkly romantic qualities, saves dark colours from the death of being boring.

2. Prints, Prints, Prints

With floral and scarf, aztec and animal, swirls and dots and zigzags, cosmic and paint splash, 2012 never had a scarcity of prints. But, what’s awesome was the print on print play on a lot of outfits. And, why, whether in haute couture or RTW, prints were present year round.

3. Surprise of Sexy Skin

Showing off of skin got quite classy in 2012. Ladies opted to tease with just a hint of skin through sheer fabrics. Peekaboo of skin also got inventive with the birth of laser cut-outs, and with the designs that cleverly accentuated just one body part like the back, shoulder, or waist.

4. Metallic Madness

Sparkles and glitters are synonymous to glamour — and glamour, fashion could not live without; therefore, silvers, golds, and even pinks in the form of sequins and shimmery fabrics are requirements every year, yes even in 2012. Any objections?

5. Neon and Brights

Okay, so white, black, and red had been crowd favourites this year. But, if we must say, neon and brights in every hue imaginable drastically changed the tides and made quite the impression on the fashion-forward gen. Neon and brights coloured even the usually serious and classic lace, doilies, eyelets, fringe, and fur giving out a quirky vibe. Who’s to say that neon worked even in metallic fabrics.

Neon high-street fashion

Valentino Pre-Fall 2013

2012 style and fashion could be described in these words: inventive, outrageous, and fearlessly individual. Both new bloods and established designers revitalized the fashion world and satisfied the hunger of edgy and experimental stylistas for fresh perspectives and more personal, characteristic, custom takes on style. So, generally it had been a year of success for fashion, don’t you agree?

Other top trends that didn’t make it to the top 5, but were notably present, were fringe and feathers, peplum, and ombre.

Which trend gets your thumbs-up?

2012 Best Dressed Celebrity Women (Poll)

featured

The holiday season is in full swing and so are our yearly round-ups of all things fabulous! Having determined our 2012 MissesDressy Style Award-ees, we’re now honing in on celebrity women that have kept our eyes glued to computer & TV screens. And trust us, choosing the best dressed ladies in Tinsel Town was no easy task– the red carpet has been on fire this year! From musical goddesses like Gwen Stefani to glamorous (and newly pregnant– yay!) royalty like Kate Middleton here’s our 2012 Best Dressed Celebrity Women list!

Olivia Palermo

If we could package and sell this girl’s street style we’d be gazzillionaires! From magazine spreads to simply fabulous looks during Spring/Summer Fashion week, Olivia’s style is always clean and spot on. Perfection may be a myth but her wardrobe comes pretty close.

Marie Claire Spain 2012 - London Fashion week S/S 2013 - London FW A/W 2012 - 2012 Convivio Charity gala

Victoria Beckham

To accompany two fabulous A/W 2012 and S/S 2013 collections Victoria Beckham (strangely we can’t just call her Victoria– gotta say the whole thing!) has an equally classic personal style to boot. Always looking pulled together and photo-ready she’s seamlessly become synonymous with the term “best dressed”.

Vogue April 2012 - At LAX in one of our favorite capes - MBNYW S/S 2012 Glamour US September 2012

Kim Kardashian

Though said through clinched teeth, we must admit Kim K. has turned her fashion sense up a notch this year. Some say it’s due to her hot and heavy relationship with  style saavy designer/rapper Kanye West, but who knows for sure?  Either way it’s been nice to see her sprucing up those hum-drum red carpet and street looks. Hope she keeps it up for 2013…

Arriving at a Miami Airport - Visiting a gun range– overdressed perhaps? - 2012 MTV EMA’s - Hanging out in sunny Miami

Rihanna

In more ways than one it’s been a break out, renegade sort of year for the pop mega star. Not only was she coasting from the huge success of “Talk That Talk” but she outdid her former turn around rate and recently released another chart topper, “Unapologetic”. All the while she managed to middle finger the public by rubbing our noses in her reunion with ex-beau Chris Brown. And then there’s her Vogue cover, 100+ hairstyle changes, and countless red carpet stunners. We surrender Rihanna– it’s your world and we’re just living in it!

2012 Grammy Awards - Battleship Japan premiere - 2012 VMA PerformanceVogue November 2012

Gwen Stefani

Another bad girl with fabulous fashion sense, Gwen Stefani’s style has been consistently cool. The No Doubt front woman owned the stage and red carpet this year, in the wake of the bands revamp. There’s little this Cover Girl can’t do– or hasn’t done.

Elle UK October 2012 - Thanksgiving Fun with husband Gavin Rossdale – London Halloween Party - No Doubt performance at Gibson Amphitheatre

Kate Middleton

Ah, the Duchess of Cambridge is the model of elegance and classic beauty. She can do no wrong in our eyes and with a new addition to the royal family on the way (rumored to be a boy– hmmm) we can’t wait to see her fabulous maternity wear in 2013!

Olympic gala 2012 - 2012 UK premiere of War Horse - 2012 London Paralympics

Kerry Washington

The always chic Scandal actress had a year of fab style. Beautiful and sophisticated, it’s always a treat to see Kerry out and about, though her recent weight loss has reached it’s peak in our opinion. Not another pound, Kerry!

White House Corespondents Association DinnerDisney ABC TCA Winter Press tour - RADiUS-TWC ‘he Details’ Premiere

Taylor Swift

Who’s had a better year than Taylor Swift? The country music superstar put out hit after hit, racked up a ton of awards, released Wonderstruck fragrance, covered Glamour and Harper’s Bazaar (to name few) and launched spunky sneaker “RED” by Keds. Without a hair out of place she’s done it all in some of our favorite looks of the year.

Harper’s Bazaar Dec/Jan 2012/13 - 2012 MTV VMAs - 2012 Billboard Music Awards - Glamour November 2012

 Miranda Kerr

With year-old baby boy in tow (yes, the post-baby body has been reinvented) Miranda Kerr rocked 2012 in style. The Victoria’s Secret model was featured in the brands recent fashion show and was also named the new face of Mango. Regarded as a street style maven, she doesn’t have to walk a literal runway to strut her stuff!

2012 MissesDressy Style Awards!

featured

In retrospect we must admit this has been a phenomenal year in fashion— Angelia Jolie‘s infamous right leg, Kristen Stewart‘s style revamp, and that mad scientist Karl Lagerfeld‘s manifestation of our childhood past time into the most talked about piece at Spring/Summer 2013 fashion week. Gotta love the interpretive genius of this great industry. As we assemble our yearly round-ups it’s hard not to remember the creative minds and fabulous faces of the the year gone by.  With everything from Style Icons to Fashion Blogger of the Year, check out the winners of the 2012 MissesDressy Style Awards!

Best Spring 2013 RTW Collection – Burberry Prorsum

Filled with bold colors and everyone’s favorite (and possibly hazardous) candy clear handbags, Burberry Prorsum S/S 2013 stood out as chic and innovative. Though a narrow favorite, it won us over with wearable, fresh pieces. We hated choosing a winner from all the fabulous lines, but the trophy had to go to someone!

Most Influential – Anna Wintour

There are few names in fashion as well known and highly regarded as Anna Wintour. After over twenty-years as Vogue‘s editor-in-chief she’s left her mark on fashion in more ways than one. Over the year she not only gave up-and-coming designers the opportunity of a lifetime, by way of CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund, she was also one of Forbes Most Fashionable Power Women, and a frequent front rower during Mercedes Benz Fashion Week S/S 2013 shows around the globe.

Model of the Year – Karlie Kloss

Not only is Karlie Kloss the clear victor for model of the year, she’s arguably the sole face of 2012 fashion. She’s appeared in numerous spreads and runway shows including a highly controversial Numero shoot, Victoria’s Secret’s2012 and Rag & Bone S/S 2013 runway shows, and Target + Neiman Marcus’ 2012 Holiday campaign. How many 20 year-old’s do you know with a resume that extensive?

Style Maven on the Rise – Emma Stone

Over the year Emma Stone has been working her way to style greatness. Having dyed her fiery mane blonde and coupled up with new beau Andrew Garfield, 2012 has been been a fun and free year for the starlet. On the fashion radar she stunned during Spring 2013 fashion week and has appeared in one fabulous runway look after another.

Brand of the Year – H&M

This one’s a no brainer. The mega brand has been on the tip of everyone’s tongue after what’s been a jam-packed year of collaborations and hot collections. Apparently H&M is the new go-to for high-fashion designers with an itch for the mainstream market.

Fashion Blog of the Year – The Blonde Salad

If you’ve never heard of The Blonde Salad blogger, Chiara Ferragni your laptops’s either been kidnapped or you’ve been tucked under a rock for the past year. Transcending the former fashion blog box Chiara has moved from an Italian student blogger to Teen Vogue/Italian Glamour model and fashion designer, creating capsule collections for Mango and her own shoe line.

Style Icon of the Year – Anna Dello Russo

Oh, Anna. The bold and sassy editor-at-large and fashion consultant for Vogue Japan has branded herself as an eccentric style pioneer over the years. Among all of her projects and appearances this past year, her H&M jewelry collaboration and feature in Barneys Electric Holiday were two of our favorites. There’s something intoxicating about this woman; we can’t wait to see what she pulls out of her (undoubtedly fabulous) hat next.

Ginnifer Goodwin’s Hair Evolution From Long Locks to Bold Cuts

featured

Lately we’ve been marveling– obsessing, even –over Ginnifer Goodwin. Though her acting chops have spoken volumes over the years, her plethora of fabulous hairdo’s has also caught our attention. Much like long gone short actresses Michelle Williams, Emma Watson, and perhaps even Miley Cyrus (still haven’t gone yay or nay with the hawk) some women simply blossom when they loose their long locks. Ginnifer has emerged as a red carpet showstopper wearing one of our favorite looks at both the LACMA Art + Film Gala and recent American Music Awards. Take a look at her hair evolution!

The Girl Next Door: Long Locks

From her breakout role in Mona Lisa Smile to blockbuster hits Walk the Line and He’s Just Not That Into You, Ginnifer once donned the sweet “girl next door” look. Playing around with sleek and wavy styles she exuded young, fresh fashion with a hint of sugar on top– no surprise considering her hometown is Memphis, TN.

Fiery Edge: Bob and Boy Cuts

After HBO’s Big Love series concluded Ginnifer not only tackled a new role as Snow White on Once Upon a Time, but she also tackled fabulous bob and pixie ‘dos. We’re not sure whether she set out to banish her previous clean cut style or if she’s simply coming of age, but she is rocking that short cut like nobodies business. From spiked to straightened she has yet to miss a beat. Though her baby face will most likely prohibit her from ever aging too much, she definitely exudes a more refined and sophisticated look.
