Fashion Trends on the Kids’ Choice Awards ’13 Orange Carpet

Nickelodeon's 26th Annual Kids' Choice Awards - Arrivals

Nickelodeon’s annual Kids’ Choice Awards (KCA) were held on Saturday night, March 23rd at USC’s Galen Center in LA. The gorgeous Josh Duhamel was on post for the hosting duties; and (we can’t help but gush about how) he was his usual cute-witty self.

Quite a number of fun and funny A-listers were there –the likes of Niel Patrick Harris, Adam Sandler, Sandra Bullock, Johnny Depp, and Steve Carell. Beautiful and sexy ladies like Katy Perry, Fergie, and Jessica Alba also made their appearance. Kid-favorite stars wowed the crowd of course, causing some high-pitched screams and shrieks: Kristen Stewart, Selena Gomez, Victoria Justice, Bella Thorne, Miranda Cosgrove, and many more.

As for the fashion, well, the KCA orange carpet gave kind of a more chill vibe as stars did without uber formal dresses. Almost everybody settled for mini dresses, some for tea-length dresses and dressed down suits. Colors of spring and summer were abundant –and quite appropriately so– well because kids like brights and lights, don’t they? It’s their show anyway. And, (we approve that) the youngsters stuck to fresher and hipper hues instead of going for the premature maturing darker shades.  The trends? They were as follows:

Alexa-Chung-1024x768-72kb-media-14920-media-164176-1297306909

British model slash presenter slash contributing editor to British Vogue, Alexa Chung sure is one fashion icon on the rise. Her quirky-meets-chic style has captivated fashionistas the world over, inspiring us to experiment with our looks and have fun doing it.

Alexa broke into the biz in 2006 as a TV presenter, and fame just came knocking at her door since then. In 2009 and 2010, she landed big-time modelling stints with DKNY Jeans and Pepe Jeans London, respectively.

2009 seemed to be Alexa’s big year as she broke into the USA, thanks to her MTV stint. Even though her show, “It’s On with Alexa Chung” for MTV was short lived, her influence in fashion didn’t wane. In fact, Mulberry even named a handbag after her, which sold like hotcakes and was sported by other celebs as well!

One Direction Infection: 1D Girls Style Version

One Direction 1nfect1on1

Action figures, teen merchandise, countless magazine covers (Teen Vogue Dec/Jan being the latest, as seen above), a second album, and an army of screaming fans pretty much describe how big 1D has made it. Pretty boys Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Liam Payne, Zayn Malik, and Harry Styles (as if you guys don’t already know them) make up the Brit boy band. They’re cuties, but oh they are more than a face; they’ve got talent, that though they’d only finished third place in the UK X-Factor in 2010, they got signed through the infamous Simon Cowell.

But, beside the talent, they’ve got style, too –and we’ve noticed. In fact, the One Direction infection has prompted us to do some 1D girls style version.

Louis is into nautical. Niall likes the relaxed vibe and usually rocks polo shirt+khaki. Harry is often caught doing preppy with blazers and bow ties. Liam “Daddy Direction” goes for the responsible gentleman look with plaid button-ups. While, Zayn goes for sporty, often donning a varsity jacket. To match their style, we got some help from Topshop, Chuck Taylor, and Jeffrey Campbell:

Okay, so we know it’s been done before, but why can’t we join in on the fun? Confess. You’ve been infected, too.

Style It Like the “RED” Hot Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift RED

The charismatic, considerably talented, Taylor Swift has released her highly-anticipated fourth album, RED just less than a month ago. With it she proves just how (quite appropriately) red hot she is as she maintains to hold the #1 position in the Billboard’s 200 top albums chart, earns U.S. sales exceeding 1.5 million albums in RED’s first two weeks (scoring music’s highest first-week sales in more than a decade), and reaches #1 on the iTunes sales charts in 42 countries. When asked about the album title, she shares:

“Red is such an interesting color to me because you have the great part of red. Like, the red emotions that are like daring and bold and passion and love and affection. And then on the other side of the spectrum you have jealousy and anger and frustration and ‘you didn’t call me back’ and ‘I need space.”

With the release of her album she has also posted photos used in the album artwork. Style and Taylor lovers like us have taken note of the styling, individuality and honesty of the images. She sticks to her own prim and proper style, and we love it. Check out some more of the photos to get a sense of her unique style.

To add fuel to her hotness, Taylor Swift took home 3 of the most sought-after awards at the 2012 Europe Music Awards held in Frankfurt, Germany: Best Female Act Award, Best Live Act Award, and the first ever Best Look Award. The Best Look Award celebrates the music star with the greatest style for the year and rightfully so, Taylor Swift was voted as this year’s style leader beating Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, Jack White, and A$AP Rocky.

Taylor’s awesome night at the EMA’s capped her week in Europe which included stops in London and France for promotional appearances for RED. Before and after that, she also completed a wave of shows and guest spots in the U.S. Let’s breathe in more of Taylor Swift style goodness as we look at photos of her recent appearances in Europe and in the U.S.

Snaps of Sexy Street Style: From Behind

Made you look!

Sexy's back on the streets!

We see plenty of bare backs on the streets, particularly in the summertime. Why not? It’s perhaps the best way to make a dramatic exit while staying cool in the heat *wink. Well, hey, isn’t it great to be in a seemingly simple laid-back get-up, then make others do a double-take when they see the delightful surprise of the back detail on the outfit? Our street stylistas are quite enjoying it; obviously loving being admired from behind.

This trend from the streets may have inspired the runway and the red carpet. Or is it the other way around? Whichever way, but as far as we know, it’s quite big. A number of our clever designers and celebrities have made us crane our necks to catch a good last view of the back. Our favourites are featured below.

On the S/S 2013 Runways

Gucci balanced simple silhouettes and uni-color with ruffles and skin.

Prada, Oscar de la Renta, Reem Acra went for it and applied the swooping back detail to show a good load of sexy skin.

Jason Wu gave his pieces edginess through the cool leather harness details.

BCBG Max Azria, Alexander Wang, Michael Kors put some genius framing with cut-outs and stripes.

Altuzarra, Cushnie et Ochs, Donna Karan opted for the lower back peekaboo.

Carolina Herrera, DKNY, Monique Lhuillier kept it ultra-feminine with sheer and lace details.

Vera Wang, Suno did not bare yet still made us look because of the spine and vest accents, giving subtle contour.

Proenza Schouler, Philip Lim, Rag & Bone went the extreme opposite direction and covered up the back with fun prints and color.

 On the Red Carpet

Kate Hudson, Bar Rafaeli, Diane Kruger, Sofia Vergara

Eva Green, Kristen Stewart, Blake Lively, Zoe Saldana

Jennifer Lopez, Clare Danes, Emma Stone, Michelle Rodriguez

Anne Hathaway, Heidi Klum, Keira Knightley, Vanessa Hudgens

Florence Welch, Elizabeth Banks, Kellie Pickler, Lea Michele

Celebrity Style Focus: Leighton Meester

Leighton-Meester-leighton-meester-1361355-1024-768

Whether she’s playing the wickedly fabulous Blair Waldorf in “Gossip Girl” or singing to us who makes “them Good Girls Go Bad,” Leighton Meester sure knows how to do it in style.

The actress, whom we last saw co-starring with funnyman Adam Sandler in “That’s My Boy,” can teach young ladies out there a thing or two about dressing; so let’s backtrack Miss Meester’s best red carpet outfits from 2006 through 2012:

2006: Beach Blonde

Tanned with super light blonde hair, Leighton looked every bit the fresh young Hollywood newcomer that she was. Here she was at a Motorola event in Hollywood wearing a knee-length lace kimono dress with printed flats.

2007: Blair is Born

Here’s Leighton, who’s dyed her hair brown, with her “Gossip Girl” co-star, Blake Lively at the CW Television Critics Association Press Tour party in West Hollywood. Never to be overshadowed by her on-screen BFF, Leighton wore a green mini dress that contrasted well with Blake’s yellow frock.

2008: Miss Missoni

That year we saw Leighton really moving up the style ladder. One perfect example is this well-loved outfit of hers at the 5th Anniversary of Fashion Rocks. This one shoulder evening dress by Missoni (a label of which she will become a face) was well-received by fashionistas and fans alike for its lovely colors and over-all chicness.

2009: Gossip Goddess

Leighton Meester impressed us even more when she attended the 2009 Primetime Emmy Awards wearing a white Greek-inspired Bottega Veneta dress. While some didn’t like her makeup in this event for being a little too ‘dark,’ I personally think it gave a nice contrast to her white dress. I loved the dramatic look!

2010: Miss(ter) Meester

In 2010, Leighton made an edgy turn style-wise, wearing uncommon choices at red carpet events. That year she some avant-garde frocks such as a lace jumpsuit and a crocheted dress. This one is no exception: at the 20th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards Leighton wore a charcoal-hued suit by Thom Browne complete with a necktie. The budding star (and stylista) balanced out her mannish threads with tousled hair, smoky makeup, and high heeled pumps.

2011: Leather, Louis, Leighton

Proving that she’s no novice when it comes to high fashion, Leighton attended the 2011 Met Gala wearing head-to-toe Louis Vuitton. Her look was met with applause from fashion experts, praising her for making such a bold choice.

2012: Golden Glamour

While some weren’t impressed by Leighton’s outfit at this year’s Met Ball, she sure glowed on the red carpet. She wore a gold applique and nude tulle Marchesa Fall 2012, which she paired with a clutch, also from Marchesa.

2012 MTV VMA Readers’ Choice Best Dressed

MTV_video_music_awards_logo_png_610x400_q85

Last Monday, we created a mini-poll over at our Facebook page asking our friends who they thought dressed the best at the recent 2012 MTV Video Music Awards. Our candidates included:

Since we couldn’t decide ourselves on who really was the most fabulous at this red carpet event, we asked the help of our friends to pick that one lovely lady. The votes have been counted, and now we have a winner! And she is…

*Drumroll*

KATY PERRY!

And don’t you think the singer absolutely deserved it? She looked gorgeous that evening in her Elie Saab gown. What’s interesting is that the dress was part of the designer’s 2004 collection–but it seems to be a modern classic already!

Another reason why hers was such an impressive look this time is its subdued appeal. Kudos to the lady for shedding the gimmicky outfit and opting for an elegant look!

In dressing for every formal or red carpet event, the most important factor a lady should consider is elegance. Our collection of red carpet dresses has a wide variety of styles that are great choices for trendy, classic, edgy, or even vintage-inspired looks. But what’s the best thing about our collection is that all its pieces are guaranteed to have elegant and tasteful designs. Here are a few of the most popular among our red carpet dresses:

Can’t get enough of prints? Animal, tribal, floral, scarf, cosmic, why not try them — even on shoes?

It’s all good because the print trend may not be simmering down just yet. We blogged about the trend not so recently (see them here: Print ManiaKaleidoscope FashionAfrocentric, and Scarf Prints), but it seems that up to now, it continues. Just check-out the latest print sightings on hot celebrities Katherine McPhee, Selita Ebanks, Emma Watson, and Kristen Stewart (image source: Frills and Thrills).

When you find that doing a printed look gets complicated (whether because you find it difficult to make prints on dresses work for your figure or you just can’t let go of your LBD), try jazzing up your look with printed shoes. Below are just a few of the Hollywood stars who have done this simple trick to add character to their look (L-R Florence Welch, Hanne Gaby, Rachel Bilson, Ashley Tisdale).

Another darling celebrity who has fallen in love with the idea is Olivia Palermo. Check-out a number of her appearances with her wearing printed shoes.

But if you are bold enough, why not try print on print? Here is a zany photo of designer Minna Parikka that just might inspire you.

High-end designers and notable supermodels also appreciate this trend. Below are printed shoes on a model for Givenchy Resort 2012-2013, and on Zina Charkoplia (image source: fashionvibe.net).

Join the print frenzy and do your own foot pop in these printed shoes by designers Tony Bowls and Alisha Hill, available at MissesDressy.com.

The Style Sensible Ms. Emma Watson

Emma Watson

Emma Watson. She can be light, all charming, innocent, sweet, young, and fresh. But she could also be dark, sensual, broken, angry, rogue, and mysterious. That’s how talented she is, even at a young age.

But the talented Ms. Watson is also style sensible. Allow us then, to turn a style spotlight on her, one of our favorite Brit actresses. She has graced the cover of countless magazines and has bagged the endorsement deal with Burberry. Her quiet intelligence is usually what is showcased in her photo shoots for these fashion spreads and ad campaigns.

Like many young superstars, she seems to adore mini dresses. But she often picks unique pieces to make a fierce statement, but balances it with her signature sleek hairdo and dramatic make-up. She also often dons coats or jackets to amp up her look.

She loves to wear elegant long dresses too, but adds a bit of a twist by picking unusual prints, silhouettes, and textures.

Below are some of our favorite quotes of her, from her interview with Mr. Derek Blasberg for Harper’s Bazaar’s Fabulous at Every Age feature.

ITEM OF CLOTHING SHE WOULD NEVER THROW OUT: “My old school satchel. It looks better the older it gets”.

HOW SHE DEFINES HER PERSONAL STYLE: “Jean Cocteau said, ‘Style is a very simple way of saying complicated things’”.

ON WHAT’S HER OWN FASHION TRADEMARK: “If I get it right, a kind of drama whilst looking understated. If I get it right!”.

HER FAVOURITE ACCESSORY: “Can I say lipstick? I don’t like to accessorize too much because I want people to see me first and my clothes second”.

She’s sensible alright. So, to capture her style, try these dresses by Jovani Homecoming available at MissesDressy.com.

Eclectic Eccentricity Style Series: Kristen Stewart

KRISTEN STEWART

K.Stew style, is it laid back or lazy? Kristen Stewart’s characteristic messy hair, sneaky Chucks, and awkward posture have helped create her famous signature style. We see her below changing into sneakers while still in her awesome lacy gown and sexy mini dress. Fearless, right? Who cares what the fashion critics blabber so long as she is comfortable.

Whether she’s on the streets or the red carpet, Kristen Stewart manages to put an edgy spin to sweet sophisticated couture. She tones down dressy numbers with leather jacket, beat-up Chucks, or a stack of bracelets. Check her out on the red carpet.

But her I don’t care fashion demeanor seems to be evolving as she gets featured in several top magazines like Vanity Fair and Elle.

K. Stew is well on her way to discovering her inner glam fashionista, infusing trendy styling with her own flavour. We see her rocking some trendy frocks with unique abstract prints, but keeping her do and make-up very minimal and fresh.

For someone so boyish, K. Stew seems to love sexy flirty mini dresses. Join this eccentric style rebel and take your pick among these mini dresses by top brands Jovani and Theia, available at MissesDressy.com.
